About Me
- The Co-operative Cambridge Folk Festival
- The Cambridge Folk Festival is one of the premier music events in Europe and one of the longest running and most famous folk festivals in the world. It has become hugely popular and a regular sell out attracting ten thousand people, many of whom return year after year. The Festival is renowned for its eclectic mix of music and a wide definition of what might be considered folk. The best traditional folk artists from the UK and Ireland rub shoulders with more contemporary acts, the finest American country, blues and roots artists, acclaimed singer songwriters and even the odd pop star. Bluegrass, gospel, cajun, zydeco, jazz, world, klezmer and a ceilidh are also regular features. The line up has reflected the many changes in the music scene from the 60s to the present and is always a hotbed mix of the old and the new. The list of performers who have appeared reads like a who’s who and the Festival has been a launching pad for many now well known artists.

I know some are regulars but I didn't get to go this year and wasn't able to see many of these bands. I haven't see Colin Reid at the festival since...ohhh a few years back. And Rusted Root are just amazing. Generally speaking though you guys pick well!

I've recently moved to the UK from Canada and am a HUGE fan of the Winnipeg Folk Festival (in my hometown - it's amazing) and am seriously heartbroken that I will miss it this summer. As for the person that doesn't want to see any 'non folk/roots' artists headlining - Off to Cropredy with you.Cambridge is about so much more than 'folk'.Some of my favourite performance in recent years have been by Jimmy Cliff, Toumani Diabate, Nick Cave, Divine Comedy (Ooh, you can get them back), Toots & The Maytals etc etc.

This is some of my dream line up. We can all dream can't we?
Well, we are now well on the run down to the Golden Cambridge Folk Festival. We need to catch some of the oldies before they peg it (sorry, but that's just the facts). People, for example, who were up and coming in '64 like Paul Simon; people who were already in the limelight then like Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton (and many, many others!) Sets that would look back over 50 years (or nearly) would be very much loved and appreciated. Then there are all the ones who have gone - those who have contributed so much to folk music and must not be forgotten: tributes to Bert Lloyd, Ewan MaColl, Gavin Henderson ... all those who were iconic in the folk revival of the 60's and 70's (which is where the Cambridge Folk Festival came from).
Nor should the clubs be forgotten. The Cambridge Folk Festival arose directly out of Ken Woolard's association with the Cambridge Folk Club. It simply would not have happened if Ken had not found the 'scene' (as an entrepreneur) and had not become fascinated and entangled with it.
Of course, there are many who are avid Folk Festival followers and remember nothing of this. Ask them who the Clancys are and they will shake their heads. Even the mention of Shirley Collins, Davy Graham the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band and the Strawberry Hill Boys would draw a blank! They might have heard of Fairport Convention and even Tim Hart and Maddy Prior (if their parents had inflicted Bagpuss on them) but they probably would not have a clue where their favourites actually cut their eye teeth and drew their inspiration from!
Folk Music is about 'tradition' and influences. It moves on to accommodate the 'flavour of the month' but it also draws for its strength on honour and respect for the people who went before, however out of fashion they may be.
I would like top see the next four years celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of THE foremost and most celebrated Folk Festival in the world (though perhaps not the biggest). Many of the 'originals' are already gone and, sadly, some will not see the day when they can celebrate 'fifty years on'.
Let us 'catch the moment' while we can and, at the same time, let other, newer, performers give credit where credit is due!
